Color Your Calm — Part Two: A

Welcome Back to the WGTS Blog Series

Thank you for becoming such a vital part of our community and for joining us over these past few weeks. This week’s theme, Color Your Calm, took on a very real and personal meaning for me. In this post, I want to share an experience that reminded me once again how creative faith practices can bring peace, hope, and healing.

Finding Calm in the Midst of Crisis

Last week, I experienced what I now call a real-life creative therapy session — inside a hospital room. After suffering a severe asthma attack, I was hospitalized for three days. My body was in distress; my heart rate dangerously high. The medical team worked diligently, administering high doses of steroids and oxygen to stabilize my breathing.

As I lay there connected to IVs and monitors, I began practicing what I teach — intentional breathing, focused calm, and mindful prayer. I tried to steady my breath and fix my mind on something greater than the fear that surrounded me.

Eventually, I was told I would need to be transferred to another hospital better equipped to handle my condition, which was complicated by an underlying autoimmune disease. It had been years since I’d faced such a medical challenge — and yet, even there, I saw God’s hand at work.

Coloring My Calm in a Hospital Room

Once I was settled, my family asked what I needed from home. Among the items I requested were my coloring books, loose coloring pages, and several sets of pencils and markers. Even surrounded by the constant beeping of machines and the hum of hospital life, I found peace in those pages.

The one I chose first featured a woman sitting in a field of flowers with a scripture above her head:

“God is within her, she will not fail; God will help her at the break of day.” — Psalm 46:5

How appropriate that this was the page I reached for in that moment. As I colored, I couldn’t help but smile — this was a design I had created myself. God had given me this idea months before to encourage others, and now He was using it to encourage me.

I read that verse over and over as I added color to each flower and butterfly. Every stroke became a prayer, every hue a declaration of faith. Even as my body fought to heal, my spirit found rest.

Faith Meets Medicine: The Divine Partnership

My medical team worked tirelessly — adjusting medications, monitoring vitals, and offering compassion. Yet I know it was God’s healing power, combined with the prayers of family, church members, and friends, that truly sustained me.

In those quiet hours, I was reminded of something profound: the science is sound, but my faith in God is what transforms stress into surrender and pain into peace. This experience was a living testimony of everything WGTS teaches — that creative faith therapy can renew both mind and spirit.

A Ministry Moment in the Hospital

As my condition improved, I began talking with nurses, doctors, and even the hospital chaplain about my work with WGTS. They noticed my coloring pages and were intrigued by the words We Get To Serve.

One nurse told me, “You radiate a light — I am happy I was your nurse.” Another said, “There’s something peaceful about your room.” When the chaplain stopped by, she asked about my ministry, and I was able to share how WGTS combines creativity and faith to bring healing and hope. Another nurse commented on what a blessing I must be to others to have so many visitors and people who clearly were concerned about me.

I told her — my work and life are about service; this isn’t just a slogan or a company name — it’s a lifestyle. Even in a hospital bed, I got to serve. I sincerely believe that we are always on assignment, no matter where we find ourselves. A life of service to me is the heart of it all.

Peace That Passes Understanding

Yes, I colored my calm that week — literally and spiritually. The scripture above that woman reminded me that God is always within me, even in moments of fear or fragility. I am here today because of His grace and mercy — alive, grateful, and more determined than ever to share this message of healing through faith and creativity.

To those who prayed for me, thank you. To those reading this and walking through your own difficult season, remember this truth:

You are not alone. God cares. He sees you. He hears you. And He will carry you through.

Your Turn — Share Your Story

Have you experienced a moment when creative therapy — coloring, journaling, painting, or another form of expression — became your place of peace? We’d love to hear your story. Your testimony might be exactly what someone else needs to hear.

You can share it with us in the comment section about your reflections for possible inclusion in future WGTS stories of faith and creativity.

Let’s continue to Color Our Calm together. Remember — We don’t have to serve — We Get to Serve.
